Prayer

“All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.”
– Blaise Pascal

Psalm 131
A song of ascents. Of David.

My heart is not proud, Lord,
    my eyes are not haughty;
I do not concern myself with great matters
    or things too wonderful for me.
But I have calmed and quieted myself,
    I am like a weaned child with its mother;
    like a weaned child I am content.

Israel, put your hope in the Lord
    both now and forevermore.

Our Gracious Father, we thank you that you are our rest for our anxious hearts.
You are faithful in times of trouble, your love and mercy and compassion on us never end.
We know this because of what you have given to us in the Lord Jesus.
He has closed the divide of our sin and rebellion, He has brought us from slavery to sin and made us your children.
He has given all so that we might have you as our Heavenly Father and so come to enjoy you as our rest.
O Lord Please forgive me for my waywardness.
The distractions of the world have led me away from your joy and rest.
I have found myself this week angry without cause, bitter with resentments and believing the lies of this world instead of the wonders of your word.
Please forgive me this morning, knowing that Jesus has risen to give me new life cause me to know His life in me.
Help me to grow in love for you, Lord Jesus, renew your love in me.
Please Holy Spirit cause your fruit to abound in my life so that the traps in this world might be exposed and that I might delight and find rest in you.
Please, Lord, have mercy on my family that does not know you…….. (name people)

Please Lord have mercy on those in my street……. (name people)

Please Lord have mercy on our country we who have been so richly blessed by you, our hearts have become hard towards your love and have loved the creation instead of you Our creator.
Please give those in government your grace and wisdom.
Please, Lord, lead us into your rest that we have in Jesus

Amen

If the way be drear, if the foe be near,
Let no faithless fears o’ertake us,
Let not faith and hope forsake us,
For through many a woe to our home we go.

When we seek relief from a long felt grief;
When temptations come alluring,
Make us patient and enduring;
Show us that bright shore where we weep no more.

– Count Zinzendorf

Sermon

Discussion

– Talk in your groups about what adoption is and how God can adopt us.
– Why should being God’s children cause us to grieve sin and put it to death?
– What have you been turning to for comfort and control over the last few weeks?
– How is God seeking to form and grow you in this season?
– How might the doctrine of adoption shape our attitude towards children in need of safe homes?
