Prayer

Heavenly Father,

We praise you today for who you are.  You are holy. You are pure. You are glorious.  In you, there is no fault or blemish. You created our world and you sustain our world and every good thing we have is from you.

Father, we confess today that we are not holy, as you are.  We have fallen short of your glory and we regularly rebel against your word.  We’ve been proud and selfish and impatient. We’ve been unkind and uncaring. We’ve failed to trust you in so many different places and we’re prone to set our hope on created things for what only you can give.  Please forgive us.

We thank you that you have not left us dead in our sin and you don’t treat us as our sins deserve.  We thank you for giving us your Son. Thank you that Christ died in our place as a substitute. Thank you that He bore all of your wrath and anger at our rebellion so that we might no longer be your enemies but your children.  Forgive us for how often we think too much of ourselves and too little of Christ. Forgive us for thinking that the cross is a small or unimportant thing and remind us of how amazing it is that Christ died and rose from the dead for us.

Lord, we long to be a people who are holy as you are holy.  We long for the sin that we struggle with regularly to be gone from our lives.  Today we ask that would continue to make us more like Jesus. We ask you to change us.  We ask you to not simply modify our behaviour but to change our hearts. Please change our desires so that we want to grow and pray and spend time with you in your word.  Please give us the desire to put sin to death in our lives. Give us a greater desire for you and for holiness.

Father, we pray for our community and our world.  We pray for those who are fearful, that they would turn to you.  We pray that we would be salt and light in the world and speak the hope of the gospel.  We pray for those who are lonely, that we would reach out to them and that they would reach out to us.  Protect us from being too proud to ask for help when we need it.

Lord, we thank you for your word.  We pray that we would understand and respond rightly to you today.  Help us to clearly see your will for our lives. Help us to respond with obedience and faith.  Help us to continue to cling to your grace, that we might be the holy people you call us to be.

We pray all these things, in the name of the holy one, Jesus.

Amen.
