The Death of Jesus
45 From noon on, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 46 And about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Matthew 27:45-46
Lord God, We thank you that today we can come to you in prayer, knowing that you hear us and that you answer.
We pray for those crying out to you.
For those hospitalised, isolated, alienated.
Struggling to live.
Fighting to breathe.
Battling a horrible disease.
We ask for your peace and healing to be upon those who suffer. We ask for your comfort to be upon those who are fearful. We pray for your protection over those caring for the sick.
This day, we remember you, Jesus.
Man of sorrows, despised and rejected,
wounded for our transgressions,
bruised for our iniquity.
On this most terrible and wonderful day,
we remember that you bore our weakness
and carried our pain.
Father God, as we listen to Jesus’ words
on the cross, reveal our hearts.
Show us the stark truth about ourselves.
Help us to take time to be quiet, to be still,
to reflect on the significance of this day for us.
For too long we have gone our own way,
pleasing ourselves, doing what we want to do.
We have not loved you with all our heart, mind
and soul, and we have not loved our neighbour
as ourselves.
Thank you, Saviour God, that your hands are
always stretched out in blessing and healing.
Hear our prayers for those who feel abandoned and forsaken.
Hold them in their fears.
Walk with them in their darkness.
Comfort them with your presence.
Thank you for winning the victory on the hill
and giving us the opportunity to live again.
